The chip division earned the whole company.

91% probability Samsung's DS Division Q3 2026 operating profit reaches at least KRW 60tn, after a record KRW 89.2tn in Q2 on a group operating profit of KRW 89.5tn. The semiconductor unit earned essentially all of Samsung's profit, because the phone business lost money.

KRW 60tn
quarterly DS operating profit · vs KRW 89.2tn in Q2

Samsung Electronics posted record Q2 2026 group operating profit of KRW 89.5tn, up 1,814% year-on-year and 56% sequentially, on record revenue of KRW 171.5tn, up 130% year-on-year and 28% quarter-on-quarter. The DS Division reported consolidated revenue of KRW 127.5tn and an all-time record operating profit of KRW 89.2tn, driven primarily by AI server demand, with semiconductor operating margin reaching about 70%. Samsung ramped HBM4 volumes and delivered initial HBM4E samples to leading customers. The MX and Networks unit posted revenue of KRW 33.2tn but an operating loss of KRW 0.7tn as rising component costs compressed mobile margins. Source: Samsung Electronics Q2 2026 results.

— 1 · The Locked Call

Samsung's DS Division Q3 2026 operating profit is at least KRW 60tn — P = 0.91.

We lock a binary: Samsung Electronics' reported DS Division operating profit for Q3 2026 is KRW 60tn or higher. Confidence 91%.

Q2 2026 DS operating profit was KRW 89.2tn. Our threshold sits about 33% below that. The lock does not forecast the direction of the memory cycle. It asks that the cycle not reverse by a third within a single quarter.

— 2 · A correction to our own calibration

P-106 locked SK Hynix at KRW 32tn. It landed at KRW 60.5tn.

This series already holds a memory-cycle lock. P-106 put SK Hynix's Q2 2026 operating profit at or above KRW 32tn, at 0.91 confidence. It resolved HIT: the actual figure was about KRW 60.5tn, an 89% overshoot of the threshold.

A hit is a hit, and it counts in the record. But that lock taught almost nothing, because the threshold was never genuinely in contention. Setting a floor so far below the plausible outcome that no realistic scenario touches it produces a scorecard entry without producing a forecast. It inflates the hit rate while degrading the information the record is supposed to carry.

P-314 is written as the correction. A 33% buffer against a line that just moved 56% in a single quarter is a real threshold — a sharp memory price rollover would test it. The confidence stays at 0.91 because we still think it holds, but the number is now positioned where a miss is conceivable rather than fanciful.

We also disclose the concentration this creates. P-106 on SK Hynix, P-163 on South Korean October exports, and P-314 here all ride the same AI-memory upcycle. As with the New Zealand hydro cluster in this same tranche, those rows are not independent of one another.

— 3 · Why the division and not the group

KRW 89.2tn of KRW 89.5tn. The phones lost money.

Samsung's Q2 2026 group operating profit was KRW 89.5tn. The DS Division alone earned KRW 89.2tn of it. The two figures are nearly identical, and that near-identity is not a rounding artefact — it is what happens when one division earns everything and another loses. The MX and Networks unit turned over KRW 33.2tn of revenue and posted an operating loss of KRW 0.7tn, as component costs, largely memory, compressed handset margins.

That produces a genuine naming hazard. A lock written on Samsung operating profit would today resolve almost identically whether scored on the group or the semiconductor division. If the mobile unit returns to profit in Q3, the two diverge, and the lock's meaning changes after the fact.

So the criterion names the DS Division. It also fixes the peculiar internal dynamic at work: Samsung's memory business is profiting from the very price environment that is hurting Samsung's phone business. The company is, in part, selling expensive components to itself.

The support for the floor is the HBM4 ramp and the initial HBM4E samples now with lead customers, which are contracted-design wins rather than spot sales, plus semiconductor operating margins near 70%. The residual 9% is a sharp memory price correction or an AI server capex pause landing inside one quarter.

Binary: YES if reported Q3 2026 DS Division operating profit is KRW 60tn or greater; NO if below. THE DS (Device Solutions) DIVISION operating profit — NOT group operating profit (KRW 89.5tn in Q2 2026, nearly identical only because the mobile unit posted a loss), NOT DS revenue (KRW 127.5tn in Q2), NOT group revenue (KRW 171.5tn), NOT net profit, NOT the memory sub-segment alone if reported separately from foundry and system LSI, and NOT a nine-month cumulative figure. The quarter is JULY-SEPTEMBER 2026, on Samsung's calendar financial year.

P-106 locked SK Hynix at KRW 32tn and it landed at KRW 60.5tn. A hit that was never in doubt is not a forecast. This threshold can actually be reached.
